Jaén, in southern Spain, is famous for its endless olive groves. However, its food scene is now attracting attention for another reason: the city has been included in the GEO Index 2027 selection of ten European cities worth visiting for their gastronomy before they become crowded tourist destinations.
According to an article published by Diario Jaén on 12 October 2026, the selection examined 126 European cities. It considered tourism accommodation data alongside culinary identity, local traditions and gastronomic recognition. The result is particularly interesting because Jaén combines a strong olive-oil culture with four Michelin-starred restaurants in a relatively small city centre.
Extra virgin olive oil is more than an ingredient here. It connects local farmers, traditional recipes and innovative chefs. Visitors can discover simple dishes, regional produce and ambitious tasting menus without losing sight of the landscape that makes Jaén distinctive.
At Bagá, chef Pedro Sánchez celebrates seasonal ingredients and the flavours of his homeland. His intimate restaurant focuses on carefully designed dishes that often use only a few ingredients. Its name refers to the olive blossom, creating a direct link between modern cuisine and the province's agricultural identity.
Dama Juana tells a more personal story. Chef Juan Aceituno was inspired by his grandmother Juana, who introduced him to the pleasures of cooking. His menus combine family memories, local landscapes and updated traditional recipes, showing how a restaurant can preserve cultural heritage while offering something new.
Radis, led by Juanjo Mesa, also looks towards the past. Its cooking draws inspiration from traditional flavours and childhood memories. Instead of simply copying old recipes, the restaurant transforms familiar ideas into a contemporary dining experience.
Malak takes another creative approach to regional cuisine. Its contemporary dishes reinterpret local food traditions and demonstrate that innovation does not necessarily mean abandoning your roots. Together, the four restaurants offer different interpretations of the same territory.
This recognition could bring opportunities for hotels, small businesses, food producers and hospitality students. Nevertheless, greater popularity also creates challenges. Jaén will need to protect its authenticity, support sustainable tourism and ensure that local communities benefit from the attention. Its greatest strength may be the balance between outstanding food and a city that still feels discoverable.
