The future is vertical. The questions are real.
1 · Rome: a shorter journey, a longer checklist
Imagine landing in Rome and finding that the final stretch of your journey takes longer than the flight you have just completed. Congestion has made airport transfers an obvious target for advanced air mobility. Archer and ITA Airways have agreed to explore an electric air-taxi network in Italy, with Midnight as the proposed aircraft. The manufacturer dates its announcement to 29 October 2026; the Avion Revue article supplied for this lesson appeared the following day. This is a partnership announcement, rather than evidence that passengers can already book an electric flight into central Rome. [1]
2 · Reading the promise carefully
The supplied news report presents a striking comparison: journeys lasting 60–90 minutes by road could become flights of approximately 10–20 minutes. It also describes a possible Fiumicino–Rome flight lasting under ten minutes. Those figures refer to proposed flying times, not a guaranteed door-to-door transfer. Nor should a promotional description of quiet flight be understood to mean silence. Zero exhaust emissions during electric flight also differ from zero environmental impact across manufacturing, electricity generation and battery disposal. Distinguishing a target from a measured outcome is essential when reporting on emerging technology.
3 · Dubai: infrastructure meets flight testing
Joby provides a useful comparison. In November 2025, it reported a point-to-point flight between sites in the United Arab Emirates and announced further Dubai vertiport locations. Its account links aircraft testing with the physical places needed for a network. These are tangible milestones, but the dated announcement alone cannot establish the availability of a particular scheduled service today. A vertiport is more than a landing pad: passengers need safe access, aircraft need charging and operators need procedures that remain workable when weather or equipment disrupts the timetable. [2]
4 · Britain and China: different pathways
In July 2026, Joby and Virgin Atlantic finalised an agreement for a proposed UK electric air-taxi service, identifying Heathrow and Manchester among the expected initial locations. Again, a commercial partnership does not automatically constitute permission to carry passengers. EHang describes a different stage in China: its EH216-S has Chinese certification and is commercially operated under Chinese operator approvals. That statement should not be expanded into a claim that unrestricted citywide networks exist everywhere, or that a Chinese approval authorises European operations. Geography matters as much as the aircraft itself. [3,6]
5 · Spain: developing the aircraft
Spain is participating through aircraft development as well as demonstrations. Crisalion describes Integrity as a piloted electric aircraft designed for five passengers and one pilot. Its website states that certification is in progress and refers to indoor, outdoor and wind-tunnel testing of a one-sixth-scale model. These details are valuable precisely because they identify the development stage. A scale-model test supports engineering work; it does not prove that the full-size passenger aircraft is certified. Students considering technical careers should learn to describe such evidence accurately, without turning an ambitious design into an operational airline. [4]
6 · Madrid and Benidorm: two distinct milestones
EHang reports that its EH216-S flew over Madrid’s Jarama circuit during a September 2026 mobility event. This offers a concrete Spanish demonstration, rather than evidence of a regular Madrid air-taxi route. Meanwhile, ENAIRE’s October 2026 event in Benidorm included a simulation of digital U-space services for coordinating drone operations. U-space concerns unmanned traffic integration; it is not a blanket authorisation for every passenger aircraft. Together, these examples show that aircraft demonstrations and airspace-management preparation can advance alongside each other while answering different questions. [5,6]
7 · The real test is the whole journey
Consider a hypothetical Málaga Airport–Costa del Sol service. Before celebrating a shorter airborne journey, planners would need to examine the time spent reaching the vertiport, checking in, boarding and travelling onward after landing. A passenger using a wheelchair would also need reliable information about step-free access, transfers, cabin space and mobility-device handling. This Málaga scenario is a classroom planning exercise, not an announced route. Asking who benefits, who pays and who might be excluded turns an exciting transport proposal into a serious public-policy discussion.
8 · Skilled people make the system work
The opportunity extends beyond piloting. Battery diagnostics, electrical systems, maintenance records, cybersecurity and ground operations all demand skilled people. These are suggested learning connections with vocational education, not a promise that a particular qualification automatically authorises aircraft maintenance. Aviation roles can involve additional licensing and specialist training. Technical English matters because a vague handover or misunderstood warning can undermine a carefully engineered system. The strongest careers message is therefore practical: build transferable skills, understand the limits of your qualification and learn to communicate evidence clearly.
9 · A future worth questioning
Were electric air taxis to become reliable and affordable, they could complement selected transport connections. Yet a fast demonstration flight cannot settle questions about fares, capacity, weather resilience or social value. It is the quality of the complete service that will determine whether the concept earns public trust. For readers, the task is to remain curious while separating what has happened from what companies hope will happen. The future may take off vertically; convincing evidence still has to be built step by step.
3 key takeaways
Italy is exploring a network.
Archer and ITA want electric flights to shorten selected airport transfers. Their agreement establishes a project, not proof of an operating Italian air-taxi service.
La alianza abre una posibilidad; no confirma una red comercial en funcionamiento.
Compare like with like.
Partnerships, demonstration flights, scale-model tests and authorised operations answer different questions. Spain’s examples include Crisalion’s development, EHang’s Madrid demonstration and ENAIRE’s U-space preparation.
Un acuerdo, una prueba y una autorización no significan lo mismo.
Trust needs more than speed.
Accessibility, fares, weather, environmental impact and skilled staff will shape the value of the service. Judge the full passenger experience, not airborne minutes alone.
El éxito depende del viaje completo, de su utilidad y de las personas que lo hacen posible.

Infographic 3 · The hidden minutes
Complete transfer time = access + check-in / waiting + boarding + flight + onward travel.
The supplied report’s illustrative Rome comparison concerns road travel versus proposed airborne time, not equal journey boundaries.
Classroom example only: 25 minutes before flight + 10 in the air + 15 onward. These figures are invented for critical comparison.
Ask about lifts, transfers, seating and mobility devices before judging the complete passenger experience.
