01

The aviation industry is facing a challenge that cannot be solved simply by building more aircraft. It needs people. According to Airbus’s October 2026 Global Services Forecast, airlines and related businesses will require 2.44 million additional skilled professionals by 2045: 730,000 maintenance technicians, 660,000 pilots and 1.05 million cabin crew. Meanwhile, the global aviation services market could exceed $420 billion. These are worldwide forecasts, not guaranteed vacancies in Spain. Nevertheless, they send a powerful message to young people choosing their next qualification.

02

For students of Spanish vocational education and training (VET), the opportunity goes far beyond becoming a pilot. Aircraft maintenance, avionics, industrial automation, precision machining, composites, electronics, logistics and quality control all contribute to keeping aircraft safe. A maintenance technician might inspect a hydraulic system, interpret a technical manual or document a repair. A production specialist might help manufacture lightweight structures. In both cases, safety, accuracy and teamwork are essential.

03

Spain already has an aerospace network stretching from Getafe and Illescas to Seville, Cádiz and Albacete. Airbus operates at these locations, while vocational centres prepare learners for technical roles. The CIFP Aguas Nuevas in Albacete is a notable example of specialised aeronautical training, with links to the local aviation industry. Across Spain, students can explore higher VET qualifications in aeromechanical maintenance and related industrial fields. However, a centre’s partnerships, available places and admission requirements must always be checked individually.

04

Learning inside a company changes the experience. A classroom can explain a maintenance procedure; a supervised workshop shows why a missing signature, an incorrectly labelled component or a misunderstood instruction matters. Spain’s VET programmes include workplace learning, although its exact organisation depends on the qualification and region. Importantly, completing a VET qualification does not automatically grant an EASA aircraft maintenance licence: professional authorisation has additional requirements.

05

Could a Spanish VET student train in Germany or Italy? Yes, through suitable Erasmus+ mobility arrangements. The European Commission confirms that eligible VET learners can undertake work-based placements abroad, subject to an agreement between the sending institution, learner and host. Germany offers a sophisticated aerospace ecosystem, including Airbus facilities and Lufthansa Technik. Italy has major aerospace manufacturing and maintenance activities. These are real industrial destinations, but naming a company is not evidence that it currently accepts Erasmus+ VET trainees. Schools must confirm a host, learning objectives, insurance, supervision and funding before promising a placement.

06

Imagine a learner from Andalusia spending several weeks in a German maintenance workshop. Before travelling, she practises English safety instructions, technical vocabulary and reporting procedures. At the host company, she observes qualified technicians, completes authorised tasks under supervision and records evidence in a learning diary. Back in Spain, she explains one improvement to her classmates. That is an illustrative scenario, not a claim about a specific existing placement. Its value lies in connecting language, technical competence and reflection.

07

The next generation of aircraft will demand new skills. Airbus anticipates growth in predictive maintenance, connected systems and digital services. Technicians will need to interpret data, work with digital documentation and continually update their knowledge. Training itself may increasingly use simulations and virtual environments. English is therefore not an optional decoration on a CV: it is often the working language of manuals, multinational teams and safety communication.

08

The practical advice is simple: compare official VET qualifications, visit open days, ask schools which companies provide workplace training, investigate Erasmus+ opportunities and build an English portfolio. The future of aviation will not be created by engineers alone. It will also depend on the people who inspect, assemble, test, maintain and improve every aircraft. One of them could be you.

Reliable sources and real pathways

Airbus (14 October 2026): Global Services Forecast 2045. European Commission: Erasmus+ VET traineeships. Spain’s Ministry of Education: Official aeromechanical qualification and VET mobility. Industry examples: Airbus Spain and Lufthansa Technik (its published student internship criteria focus on university students; they do not establish VET Erasmus+ availability).

Editorial note: The supplied aviation-market article was used as background; the statistical claims were cross-checked against Airbus’s original release. The Germany workshop story is illustrative. No specific Germany/Italy VET placement is presented as confirmed.
