Why silent letters? English stole words from Vikings, French, and Latin. We kept the spelling but stopped pronouncing some letters over 500 years ago.

Rule: 'K' is always silent before 'N'. 'W' is silent before 'R'. 'P' is silent before 'S'/'N'.
