Flashbacks: El Pasado del Pasado

La Idea de Cine

Imagina que estás contando una película. El Past Simple es la historia principal (I arrived at the party). El Past Perfect es el "Flashback": lo que YA había ocurrido antes de ese momento (Peter had already left).
Regla de oro: Si tienes dos pasados, el que ocurrió PRIMERO lleva "HAD".

The Timeline of Events

1
Past Perfect First Action
2
Past Simple Second Action
NOW

"When I arrived (2) at the cinema, the film had already started (1)."

Veamos la diferencia en contexto:

  • Example 1: The Train

    'When we got to the station, the train had left.'

    Llegamos tarde. El tren se fue ANTES de que llegáramos.

  • Example 2: The Exam

    'I passed the exam because I had studied a lot.'

    Primero estudié (causa), luego aprobé (efecto).

  • Example 3: Eating

    'I wasn't hungry because I had already eaten.'

    No tenía hambre porque YA había comido antes.

The Secret Code: Decoding 'd

Agents, listen carefully. In the field, you will rarely hear "I had gone". You will hear "I'd gone".
But beware! 'd is a double agent. It can mean HAD or WOULD.

PAST PERFECT

'd = HAD

If followed by a Past Participle (V3).

"I'd eaten already."

= I had eaten.

CONDITIONAL

'd = WOULD

If followed by a Base Verb (V1).

"I'd eat a pizza."

= I would eat.
