La Idea Clave

Piensa en el Present Simple como tu "Yo Rutinario": cosas que haces siempre, verdades universales o tu horario aburrido (I work, I eat). En cambio, el Present Continuous es tu "Yo de Ahora Mismo": lo que está ocurriendo justo en este segundo o una situación temporal (I am dancing, It is raining).
¿Rutina? Simple. ¿Ahora mismo? ¡Ponle ING!

Imagine a spy. His cover is what he does usually (Routine). His mission is what he is doing right now (Action).

James works in a bank. (Normal life)

But right now, he is jumping from a plane. (Mission)

Verb Classification: Action vs. Stative

ACTION Verbs

Verbos de movimiento o acciones físicas. ¡Sí se mueven!

"I am cooking"

STATIVE Verbs

Verbos de sentimiento, pensamiento o posesión. (Cerebro y Corazón)

Love Hate Want Need Know Believe Understand Remember Prefer Belong Seem

NO -ING (Usually)

"I understand" (Not "I am understanding")

Veamos la diferencia en contexto:

  • Example 1: Clothes

    'I usually wear jeans, but today I am wearing a dress.'

    Normalmente llevo vaqueros, pero hoy llevo puesto un vestido.

  • Example 2: The Weather

    'It rarely rains here in summer, but look! It is raining now!'

    Rara vez llueve aquí en verano, ¡pero mira! ¡Está lloviendo ahora!

  • Example 3: Eating Habits

    'My brother eats cereal every morning, but at the moment he is eating toast.'

    Mi hermano come cereales cada mañana, pero en este momento está comiendo tostadas.

The -ING Mechanics (Continuous)

Rule 1: Silent 'E'

Remove 'e' + ing

Write → Writing

Dance → Dancing

Rule 2: The Doubler (CVC)

Double consonant + ing

Sit → Sitting

Run → Running

Rule 3: The 'Y' Survivor

Keep 'y' + ing

¡La 'Y' casi nunca cambia aquí!

Play → Playing

Study → Studying

Rule 4: The 'IE' Switch

Change 'ie' to 'y' + ing

Die → Dying

Lie → Lying

The 3rd Person Mechanics (He/She/It)

Rule 1: General Rule (+S)

Add 's'

Work → Works

Eat → Eats

Rule 2: Hissing Sound (-ch, -sh, -x, -s)

Add 'es'

Watch → Watches

Kiss → Kisses

Rule 3: Consonant + Y (Change to -ies)

Change 'y' to 'ies'

Study → Studies

Fly → Flies

Rule 4: Vowel + Y (Just -s)

Don't change 'y', just add 's'

Play → Plays

Buy → Buys
