⭐ Task 0: Beyond Survival

"Angelica’s early years were defined by severe trauma and a lack of safety and love in her home, including abuse from her grandfather. Not only did she endure these challenges, but she also suffered within a domestic environment where she felt unprotected."

The Raw Truth of Angelica Shalagina

It is widely acknowledged that true strength is forged in the fires of adversity. This is perfectly exemplified by the social media influencer Angelica Shalagina, who has recently released her harrowing memoir, Alive. This story belongs to a woman who grew up in the Donbas region of Ukraine, born as Marina into a life of poverty and extreme hardship during the 1990s—a time of economic collapse in post-Soviet Ukraine.

Angelica’s early years were defined by severe trauma and a lack of safety and love in her home, including abuse from her grandfather. Not only did she endure these challenges, but she also suffered within a domestic environment where she felt unprotected. Were it not for her passion for books and writing, which became her escape and later her source of strength, she might never have survived the psychological toll of her youth. It was through these words that she eventually found the strength to reclaim her identity, choosing the name Angelica as a way to separate herself from the trauma associated with her birth name.

Angelica’s journey of self-discovery and resilience is deeply intertwined with her identity as a Ukrainian. Growing up in a heavily Russified environment, she initially struggled with her cultural identity. However, it was the war in Donbas whose impact finally forced her to confront the loss of her city, her childhood, and her sense of belonging, ultimately leading her to embrace her Ukrainian heritage. If she had not lived through the brutal reality of the four-year Russian occupation, she might not have become the powerful advocate she is today.

Her writing is raw, honest, and deeply personal, reflecting her pain, strength, and determination to share the truth about her life and the region she calls home. "You’d rather face a painful truth than live a comfortable lie," Angelica seems to suggest through her prose. Through her words, she seeks to give voice to the forgotten stories of Donbas and its people, offering a glimpse into the resilience and humanity that persist even in the face of unimaginable suffering.

Such is her determination that her story has become a reflection of the struggles faced by many in Ukraine. Her writing stands as a powerful testament to the enduring spirit of those who survive, resist, and rebuild, reminding us of the humanity that remains even when the world seems to have turned away.

Angelica: The Name Shift (2:00)

"I spent the first twenty years of my life as Marina, a name that eventually became synonymous with fear and the abuse I suffered at the hands of my grandfather. Growing up in the poverty of the post-Soviet 90s, I felt like a ghost in my own house. But then, literature arrived. I remember hiding under the covers with a flashlight, reading stories of distant lands. I started writing to build a world where I was safe. When I finally decided to leave that life behind, I needed a new name to mark the boundary between the victim and the survivor. Angelica wasn't just a choice; it was a reclamation of my soul. In my book 'Alive', I describe this transition not as a simple name change, but as a biological necessity to stay sane during the occupation of Donbas. Every time someone calls me Angelica, it reminds me that the fires of adversity did not consume me; they forged me into someone stronger."

Critic Review: Ukraine's Soul (2:00)

"Angelica Shalagina's memoir 'Alive' is a landmark in contemporary Ukrainian literature. What makes her work so powerful is her journey from a Russified youth in the Donbas to becoming a fierce advocate for Ukrainian heritage. For years, the region was subjected to a narrative that denied its true identity. Angelica lived through the loss of her city, her childhood, and her sense of belonging during four long years of Russian occupation. Her prose is raw and honest, refusing to sugarcoat the reality of life behind enemy lines. As she suggests in her book, facing a painful truth is always preferable to living a comfortable lie. This is a story that reflects the struggles of millions. It stands as a powerful testament to the spirit of a nation that refuses to be broken. By sharing the forgotten stories of her people, she offers a glimpse into a humanity that persists despite unimaginable suffering. It is a must-read for anyone who wants to understand the human cost of the war and the resilience of the human spirit."

⭐ Task 0: Introduction to Chilangoma

"I am currently based in Chilangoma (Blantyre, Malawi), specifically at DAPP Chilangoma, where I contribute to their Teacher Training College. My role here is multifaceted; in addition to delivering English lessons on various syllabus-related topics, I also support administrative tasks, particularly focusing on the digitization and organization of computer files. This experience allows for the modernization of office records."

Amanda's Story: Education as Transformation

I am currently in Chilangoma, a rural area near Blantyre, in Malawi, volunteering for a six-month program at the DNS Chilangoma Teacher Training College. This institution focuses on preparing future educators to serve in rural primary schools where resources are scarce and educational hurdles are significant.

The student body consists of adults in the process of becoming teachers. They receive not only academic instruction but also practical and community-based preparation. The goal is for them to play an active role in the development of the rural communities where they will work. Here, education is not seen simply as the transmission of content, but as a powerful tool for social transformation.

My role as a Development Instructor has involved supporting the training of these students, especially in pedagogical competencies and community engagement skills. I have collaborated with local professors in various tasks, participating in classes and initiatives aimed at promoting inclusive, high-quality education and sustainable rural development.

I arrived here as a volunteer driven by the desire to understand different educational realities and contribute from my own experience. At a personal level, this has been a constant exercise in adaptation and humility. Working in an environment with fewer resources forces you to rethink priorities and focus on the essentials: human connection, pedagogical creativity, and commitment.

Furthermore, I believe it is vital to change the simplified and often distorted image of Africa that exists in Europe. From the outside, the narrative often focuses exclusively on poverty or misfortune. While structural challenges certainly exist, the reality is much more complex: there is initiative, resilience, and a strong awareness of education’s value as a driver of change. Living and working in Malawi allows one to break with reductionist stereotypes.

🎧 VOICES FROM MALAWI

Amanda's Daily Reflection (Full Entry)

Sarah: Today started before sunrise. The air in Chilangoma is crisp and carries the scent of woodsmoke. I walked to the college, passing by children who always greet me with wide smiles and a loud "Moni!", which means hello in Chichewa. In class today, we discussed how to teach math using stones and sticks because we lack enough textbooks for everyone. My students, these incredible future teachers, showed such inventiveness! One of them, Isaac, suggested a game that turns long division into a rhythmic song. It was brilliant. Sometimes I feel tired because the heat is intense and the electricity is unreliable, but then I see the determination in their eyes. They are not just learning to teach; they are learning to rebuild their nation's future from the roots up. I remember my first week here, I felt lost, but now, the red soil and the green hills feel like home. Every time I think I am here to teach them, I realize they are actually teaching me about what really matters in life: persistence and joy despite the scarcity. We also spent time in the communal garden today, planting maize and sharing stories about our families. It's beautiful to see how education and agriculture go hand in hand here. I am truly grateful for this opportunity.

Voices of the Future (Interview)

Mr. Banda: Education in Malawi is at a crossroads. We have a growing population and a deep thirst for knowledge, but our rural schools often feel forgotten. Here at DNS Chilangoma, we don't just want our students to be "delivery men" of facts. We want them to be community leaders and agents of social change. When volunteers like Amanda join us, it creates a vital bridge between worlds. She brings new pedagogical perspectives, like the digitization of our records which is helping us plan better for the future. But more importantly, she shares our daily struggles and our small victories. This exchange is vital for a globalized world. In the West, people often look at Africa and see only "problems" to be solved. We see "potential" to be unlocked and a spirit of community that is often missing in other places. Our students face poverty, yes, but they also have an abundance of spirit. My dream is that in ten years, every child in this region will have a teacher who not only knows how to read but knows how to inspire their village to prosper. We are building a legacy here. Education is the only key that fits every lock, and together, we are turning that key. I want the world to know that Malawi is rising, and its heart is in the classrooms of these remote villages.
