The Present Simple

Mastering Present Simple

The Present Simple

1. Rutinas y Hábitos

  • "I wake up at 7:00."
  • "She goes to the gym on Mondays."
  • "We eat lunch at 2:00."
  • "My dad reads the paper daily."
  • "They play football after school."

2. Verdades Generales

  • "The sun rises in the East."
  • "Water boils at 100°C."
  • "Cats hate water."
  • "Birds fly in the sky."
  • "Doctors help sick people."

3. Estados Permanentes

  • "She lives in Madrid."
  • "I work in a school."
  • "He knows the answer."
  • "We like chocolate."
  • "My sister has a blue car."

👑 La Regla de Oro: "He, She, It"

I work / You work

He / She / It:

Works

Irregular: HAVE

I / You / We / They
HAVE (Tienen)

He / She / It
HAS (Tiene)

⚡ La Estructura (Negativa e Interrogativa)

Aquí entran en juego los auxiliares: DO y DOES.
⚠️ ¡Importante!

Negativa (-)

I / You / We / They + DON'T

  • "I don't eat meat."
  • "You don't listen to me."
  • "We don't play video games."
  • "They don't speak French."
  • "My friends don't like horror movies."

He / She / It + DOESN'T

  • "He doesn't drive a car."
  • "She doesn't cook well."
  • "It doesn't work."
  • "My brother doesn't live here."
  • "The dog doesn't bite."

Interrogativa (?)

DO + I / You / We / They...?

  • "Do you like pizza?"
  • "Do they play guitar?"
  • "Do we have homework?"
  • "Do I look okay?"
  • "Do your parents work?"

DOES + He / She / It...?

  • "Does he speak English?"
  • "Does she need help?"
  • "Does it rain often here?"
  • "Does John play tennis?"
  • "Does the bus stop here?"

Buenas tardes, estimados alumnos.

I am dancing, It is raining).
¿Rutina? Simple. ¿Ahora mismo? ¡Ponle ING!

📅 ALWAYS / USUALLY
Siempre / Normalmente (Simple)
⏱️ NOW
Ahora (Continuous)
🔁 EVERY DAY
Cada día (Simple)
📍 AT THE MOMENT
En este momento (Continuous)
🗓️ ON MONDAYS
Los lunes (Simple)
👀 LOOK! / LISTEN!
¡Mira! (Continuous)

Imagine a spy. His cover is what he does usually (Routine). His mission is what he is doing right now (Action).

James works in a bank. (Normal life)

But right now, he is jumping from a plane. (Mission)

Verb Classification: Action vs. Stative

ACTION Verbs

Verbos de movimiento o acciones físicas. ¡Sí se mueven!

Run Cook Play Study

ACEPTE -ING

"I am cooking"

STATIVE Verbs

Verbos de sentimiento, pensamiento o posesión. (Cerebro y Corazón)

Love Hate Want Need Know Believe Understand Remember Prefer Belong Seem

NO -ING (Usually)

"I understand" (Not "I am understanding")

Veamos la diferencia en contexto:

  • Example 1: Clothes

'I usually wear jeans, but today I am wearing a dress.'

  • Example 2: The Weather

'It rarely rains here in summer, but look! It is raining now!'

  • Example 3: Eating Habits

'My brother eats cereal every morning, but at the moment he is eating toast.'

The -ING Mechanics (Continuous)

Rule 1: Silent 'E'

Remove 'e' + ing

Write → Writing

Dance → Dancing

Rule 2: The Doubler (CVC)

Sit → Sitting

Run → Running

Rule 3: The 'Y' Survivor

Die → Dying

Lie → Lying

The 3rd Person Mechanics (He/She/It)

Rule 1: General Rule (+S)
