PAGS Level 3/4 Preparation

The Logic of
Relatives & Prepositions

Informal vs Formal. Do you drag the preposition at the end, or do you move it to the VIP front seat? Informal vs Formal.

INFORMAL (Everyday)

"The girl (who) I spoke TO."

Preposition at the end.

La chica con la que hablé. (Preposición al final).
FORMAL (Elegant)

"The girl TO WHOM I spoke."

Preposition moves front + WHOM.

La chica a quien hablé. (Preposición delante + WHOM).
Phase 1

The Rules of the Game

The position of the preposition changes the pronoun allowed.

PREP AT END

Relaxed Style

"The music (that) I listened TO."
PREP AT FRONT

Strict Style

"The music TO WHICH I listened."

The Logic of Relative Clauses No estudies reglas, estudia conexiones.

The Logic of Relative Clauses | PAGS Unit
PAGS Level 3/4 Preparation

The Logic of
Relative Clauses

No estudies reglas, estudia conexiones. Aprende a usar el "pegamento" (Who, Which, That) para unir ideas complejas.

Start Game
The Man THE GLUE WHO Called me

"The man WHO called me..."

Phase 1

Choose your "Glue"

Refers to...
Pronoun
Example
People
WHO / THAT
The girl who lives here.
Things
WHICH / THAT
The car which is red.
Places
WHERE
The hotel where we stayed.
Time
WHEN
The day when we met.
Possession
WHOSE
The boy whose dog is big.

Neuro Tip: Hooks

Whose sustituye a "My, Your, His, Her, Its, Our, Their".
"I met a man. His car was gold."

"I met a man WHOSE car was gold."

Phase 2

The Comma Logic

¿Pongo comas o no?

"The man who called me is here."

  • Define exactamente quién es.
  • NO COMMAS.
  • Puedes usar THAT.
NON-DEFINING

Extra "Gossip"

,

"My boss , who called me , is angry."

,
  • Añade info extra (sabemos quién es "My boss").
  • COMMAS = Pausas para respirar.
  • NEVER use THAT.
Phase 3

The Ghost Rule (Omission)

The Rule: Object Pronoun

Solo puedes quitar Who/Which/That si va seguido inmediatamente de un SUJETO (I, You, He, The man...).

Can omit (Click me)

The book that I read.

Cannot omit (No subject after)

The book that is on the table.
