Informal · Everyday English

"The girl I spoke TO."

→ Preposition at the end · pronoun optional

La chica con quien hablé. (preposición al final, pronombre opcional)

"The girl TO WHOM I spoke."

→ Preposition moves front · whom mandatory

La chica a quien hablé. (preposición delante, whom obligatorio)

Two Styles. One Rule System.

La posición de la preposición determina qué pronombre puedes usar. Sin excepciones.

Informal — End position

"The music I listened TO."

"The friend I rely ON."

The pronoun (who, that) can be omitted. The preposition stays orphaned at the end.

El pronombre puede omitirse. La preposición queda "huérfana" al final.

Formal — Front position

"The music TO WHICH I listened."

"The friend ON WHOM I rely."

Pronoun is MANDATORY: whom for people, which for things. Never that here.

El pronombre es OBLIGATORIO: whom personas, which cosas. Nunca that.
