Verbs + Patterns

Don't memorize lists. Feel the direction. Is it a future plan (To), a real experience (Ing), or a naked command (Base)? No memorices listas. Siente la dirección. ¿Es un plan futuro (To), una experiencia real (Ing), o una orden directa (Base)?

To + Infinitive (The Plan)

"I want TO travel."

Quiero viajar (Futuro/Plan).

Gerund -ING (The Movie)

"I enjoy travellING."

Disfruto viajando (Experiencia real).

Bare Infinitive (Force)

"He made me CRY."

Me hizo llorar. (Sin 'to').
Phase 1

The Logical Groups

Verbs + ING (The Experience)

ENJOYI enjoy reading.
FINISHI finished working.
AVOIDI avoid eating sugar.
KEEPKeep walking.
ADMIT / DENYHe admitted stealing it.

Verbs + TO (The Plan)

WANTI want to go.
DECIDEWe decided to stay.
HOPEI hope to see you.
PROMISEHe promised to help.
MANAGEManaged to finish.
Phase 2

The "Naked" & Sensory

Verbs that drop the "To" or change based on perception.

No "TO" Here!

LET (Allow)

"Let him GO."

MAKE (Force/Cause)

"Make her LAUGH."

MODALS (Can, Should, Must)

"I can SWIM."

The MAKE Trap

ACTIVE VOICE (Standard)

"They made him CONFESS."

No 'to'. Base form.

PASSIVE VOICE (Trap)

"He was made TO CONFESS."

The 'TO' reappears in passive!

¡En pasiva reaparece el 'TO'! (Fue obligado a confesar).

ALLOW / ADVISE / PERMIT

WITH OBJECT (Person)

"They allowed US TO GO."

Con persona = TO. (Nos permitieron ir).

NO OBJECT (General)

"They allowed GOING."

Sin persona = ING. (Permitieron ir).

ADVISE + OBJECT

"I advise YOU TO WAIT."

Te aconsejo esperar. (Hay persona "you").

PERMIT (NO OBJECT)

"We do not permit PARKING."

No permitimos aparcar. (No se dice a quién = ING).

The Meaning Shifters

Same verb, different grammar = Different Universe.

STOP

STOP + ING (Quit)

"He stopped smoking."

STOP + TO (Pause to do)

"He stopped to smoke."

REMEMBER

REMEMBER + ING (Memory)

"I remember locking it."

REMEMBER + TO (Task)

"Remember to lock it."
