The Logic of
-ING Forms

It's not just "ando/endo". It's the engine that turns verbs into nouns, adjectives, and continuous actions. No es solo "ando/endo". Es el motor que convierte verbos en sustantivos, adjetivos y acciones continuas.

ING

ACTION (Continuous)

"I am running."

THING (Gerund)

"Running is fun."

Phase 1

The Spelling Factory

Before attaching -ING, check the verb's ending. It might need modification. Antes de poner -ING, mira el final del verbo. Puede necesitar cambios.

The Silent 'E'

Rule: If it ends in 'e', DROP IT!

Make Making
Write Writing
Dance Dancing
Hope Hoping
Drive Driving
Come Coming
Live Living
Exception: Be -> Being, See -> Seeing

IE becomes Y

Rule: Change 'ie' to 'y' before adding -ing.

Die Dying Muriendo
Lie Lying Mintiendo / Tumbándose
Tie Tying Atando
Untie Untying Desatando
Vie Vying Compitiendo

The Double Consonant

Rule: 1 Syllable + 1 Vowel + 1 Consonant = Double it!

Begin Beginning (Stress on last syllable)

The Magnets

These expressions pull -ING towards them like a magnet. Estas expresiones atraen el -ING como un imán.

Value & Utility

"It's worth..."

"It's worth visiting."

Merece la pena visitar.

"It's no use..."

"It's no use crying."

No sirve de nada llorar.

"It's no good..."

"It's no good complaining."

No sirve de nada quejarse.

"There's no point..."

"There's no point waiting."

No tiene sentido esperar.

"It's a waste of time..."

"It's a waste of time arguing."

Es una pérdida de tiempo discutir.

"Spend time..."

"I spend time reading."

Paso tiempo leyendo.

"Have difficulty..."

"I have difficulty breathing."

Tengo dificultad para respirar.

Feelings & Traps

"I can't help..."

"I can't help laughing."

No puedo evitar reír.

"I feel like..."

"I feel like dancing."

Me apetece bailar.

TRAP: "Look forward TO..."

"I look forward to seeing you."

Tengo muchas ganas de verte. (TO es preposición aquí).

TRAP: "Be used TO..."

"I am used to getting up early."

Estoy acostumbrado a levantarme.

TRAP: "Confess TO..."

"He confessed to stealing it."

Confesó haberlo robado.

TRAP: "Object TO..."

"I object to paying more."

Me opongo a pagar más.

"Prefer X TO Y"

"I prefer walking to driving."

Prefiero caminar a conducir.
