The "-LY" Factory

Transform an Adjective into an Adverb by adding the magic tail. Transforma un adjetivo en adverbio añadiendo la cola mágica.

Standard (+ly)

Just add -ly.

The M.P.T. Express

Adverbs travel in a specific order: Manner, Place, Time. Orden: Manera, Lugar, Tiempo.

SUBJECT + VERB
1. HOW?
MANNER Manera (Beautifully)
2. WHERE?
PLACE Lugar (Here, At home)
3. WHEN?
TIME Tiempo (Yesterday)

"She sang beautifully at the concert last night."

Ella cantó maravillosamente en el concierto anoche.

"He ran fast in the park yesterday."

"They played quietly in their room all day."

"She waited patiently at the station for an hour."

"It rained heavily here last night."

"I slept badly in the hotel two days ago."

Frequency Exception

Frequency adverbs (Always, Never, Usually) go BEFORE the main verb, but AFTER 'To Be'.

"I always eat."
"I am always happy."
"We often visit them."
"He is rarely sad."
"She never cries."
Phase 3

The Rebels

Some words refuse to wear the "-LY" costume. Algunas palabras se niegan a usar el disfraz "-LY".

No Change (Adjective = Adverb)

FAST

"He runs fast." (NOT fastly)

HARD

"He works hard."

LATE

"He arrived late."

EARLY

"He woke up early."

STRAIGHT

"Go straight ahead."

The Traps

Adding -LY changes the meaning completely!

HARDLY = Barely (Apenas)

"I can hardly see." (Casi no veo).

LATELY = Recently (Últimamente)

"Have you seen him lately?"

HIGHLY = Very (Muy)

"He is highly recommended." (NOT altitude).

NEARLY = Almost (Casi)

"It is nearly finished."

FREELY = Without control (Libremente)

"Speak freely." (Free = $0 cost).
