Suggesting

From "Let's go" to "I suggest that he go". Master the art of suggestion, from street casual to boardroom formal. Desde "Vamos" hasta "Sugiero que él vaya". Domina el arte de sugerir, desde lo casual hasta lo formal.

Start Game (30 Qs)

Casual

"Let's grab a burger."

Polite

"We could try that place."

Formal

"I suggest that we dine early."

Phase 1

Casual & Everyday

Quick, direct, and friendly. Rápido, directo y amigable.

Use BASE VERB

The Direct Route

"Let's study now." Estudiemos ahora. (Imperativo inclusivo).

"Why don't we take a break?" ¿Por qué no tomamos un descanso?

"Why not ask him?" ¿Por qué no preguntarle? (Short form).

"Shall we go?" ¿Nos vamos? (British/Educado).

Use -ING

The Soft Question

"How about watching a movie?" ¿Qué tal si vemos una peli?

"What about calling him?" ¿Qué tal si le llamamos?

Don't use Base Verb here! "How about go" is WRONG.

Phase 2

Polite & Thoughtful

Less direct, more considerate. For work or acquaintances. Menos directo, más considerado. Para trabajo o conocidos.

We could...

"We could try the new place."

Podríamos probar... (Una posibilidad suave).

It might be a good idea to...

"It might be a good idea to book."

Sería buena idea reservar... (+ To Infinitivo).

Have you considered...?

"Have you considered taking the train?"

¿Has considerado tomar el tren? (+ ING).

Perhaps we should...

"Perhaps we should wait."

Quizás deberíamos esperar.

I think we should...

"I think we should leave."

Creo que deberíamos irnos.

Phase 3

The "Suggest" Minefield

This is where you pass or fail C1. The rules are strict. Aquí apruebas o suspendes el C1. Las reglas son estrictas.

PATTERN 1: GENERAL

No specific person involved

"I suggest going to the beach."

Sugiero ir a la playa. (Usa Gerundio -ING).

PATTERN 2: SPECIFIC PERSON

The "Subjunctive" Rule

"I suggest (that) she study harder."

Note: "She study", NOT "She studies". It's the Base Verb!

Sugiero que ella estudie más. (Verbo base siempre).

THE FATAL ERROR

Never, ever use "Infinitive" with a person object.

"I suggest him to go."

NUNCA digas "Suggest HIM TO go". Está prohibido.

PATTERN 4: NOUN + TO

Suggesting a thing to a person

"I suggested the idea TO him."

Le sugerí la idea (a él). (Aquí SÍ usas 'to' antes de la persona).
