The Logic of Causative | PAGS Unit
PAGS Level 3/4 Preparation

The Logic of
The Causative

Stop working. Start managing. Don't do it yourself—have it done for you. Deja de trabajar. Empieza a gestionar.

The Worker (Active)

"I cut my hair."

Disaster! You did it yourself.

Me corté el pelo (yo mismo). ¡Desastre!

The Boss (Causative)

"I HAD my hair CUT."

A professional did it.

Me cortaron el pelo (en la peluquería).
Phase 1

The Sandwich Rule

The Object is sandwiched between HAVE and the ACTION.

1. MANAGER

HAVE / GET

Changes tense (had, will have...)

2. THE THING

OBJECT

(The car, my hair, the roof)

3. THE ACTION

DONE (V3)

Past Participle (Fixed)

"I had the car repaired."

"I had repaired the car."

This is Past Perfect Active (You did it!).

CAUSATIVE

"I had the car repaired."

Object in the middle!

¡El objeto va en medio!

Have vs. Get

Usually interchangeable, but with a nuance. Suelen ser intercambiables, pero con un matiz.

HAVE something done

Neutral / Professional / Business

"I had my house painted."

Pagué por ello. Es un servicio estándar.

GET something done

Informal / Persuasion / Effort

"I finally got my computer fixed."

Want to mention the worker? (Active Causative)

HAVE someone DO it

"I had John fix it." (Infinitive)

GET someone TO DO it

"I got John to fix it." (To + Inf)

Si mencionas a la persona: Have + Infinitivo / Get + To Infinitivo.
