The Logic of
Question Tags

A question tag is the echo of your sentence. If you shout Positive, the echo returns Negative. It's the law of the verbal mirror. Una "question tag" es el eco de tu frase. Si gritas en positivo, el eco vuelve en negativo. Es la ley del espejo verbal.

He IS happy
isn't he?

Positive sentence → Negative Tag

You CAN'T swim
can you?

Negative sentence → Positive Tag

Phase 1

The DNA Hunt

The Tag must use the same Auxiliary DNA as the main verb. La "tag" debe usar el mismo ADN auxiliar que el verbo principal.

Visible Auxiliaries

BE, HAVE, CAN, WILL, MUST...

She is... isn't she? ... ¿verdad? / ¿no?
They have... haven't they?
You will... won't you?

Hidden Auxiliaries

No auxiliary? Use DO, DOES or DID.

You like... don't you? Te gusta... ¿verdad?
He lives... doesn't he?
They went... didn't they?

Negative Traps

Words like NEVER, NOBODY, SELDOM are negative!

You never listen... do you? Nunca escuchas... ¿verdad?
Nobody called... did they?
Phase 2

The Rebels

These cases follow their own logic. Memorize them like passwords. Estos casos siguen su propia lógica. Memorízalos como contraseñas.

The "I AM" King

"I am late, aren't I?"

Never say "am I not" (except in super formal poetry).

"I am not late, am I?"

Normal logic for negatives.

Let's & Imperatives

"Let's go, shall we?"

Vámonos, ¿te parece?

"Don't touch it, will you?"

No lo toques, ¿vale? (Commands).
