Reading: One-Euro Houses

Europe's population is starting to fall, noticeably in rural areas. In addition to the low birth rate, there’s also emigration to urban areas, where job prospects and lifestyles are far more attractive for young people. As the younger generation leaves and the older inhabitants gradually die off, houses fall into disrepair and, eventually, towns turn into ghost towns.

In Italy, there are said to be around 6,000 completely abandoned villages and another 15,000 where the population has drastically fallen. In an attempt to reverse this trend, the Sicilian town of Salemi became the first place to offer houses for sale for just €1. With Arabic architecture typical for the area and views of the distant Mediterranean Sea, Salemi is a tourist attraction. However, much of the town is run-down and its population is in decline.

Other towns and villages soon took up the €1 house sale scheme. Potential buyers must provide a detailed plan of the improvements they intend to make. In addition, buyers are given a strict time limit for completing the work. The houses are often very neglected, and all the costs of repairs are the responsibility of the purchaser. However, once finished, the owners can decide whether to become a permanent resident, use the house as a second home or turn it into a holiday flat for tourists. In some towns, there's a ban on the houses being sold, at least in the short term.

The EU has also given funds to boost economies. In Italy, some of this money is being given to dying towns. There's an idea to attract "digital nomads" – people who can work anywhere and who spend their time on the go. Some of the funds will be used for high-speed Internet, essential for digital nomads to keep in touch with the outside world. It’s hoped that more businesses will open, providing jobs and encouraging locals to stay.

Neither scheme has had much effect yet, but perhaps one day, more people will decide that a quiet, friendly village offers a better life than a busy, crowded city.

Hoy vamos a estudiar vuestro futuro.

🎯 ¿Qué vamos a conseguir hoy? (Objectives)

Track: Aviation_Career_Overview.mp3

Are you uncertain about your future? Many students think that the only path to success is studying for the "Bachillerato" and spending four or five long years at a University, only to face a job market full of uncertainty. But there is a smarter, faster, and more exciting option: Vocational Training in the aeronautical sector.

If you are looking for a career with zero unemployment and high salaries, you need to listen closely. The reality of the aviation industry has changed completely. Right now, there is a massive shortage of professionals. In Europe alone, 85,000 aircraft maintenance technicians will be needed over the next ten years.

The Companies Are Chasing You

In the past, students had to beg for internships. Today, the situation is the opposite. Major companies are coming directly to the schools to find talent. They are desperate for skilled hands. These companies are looking for students who are responsible, hard-working, and eager to learn.

A Modern Way to Learn: The "Dual Training" Model

Aviation Group is adapting to new regulations to make your entry into the workforce even faster. They are implementing a new "Intensive Dual Training" model.

  • Year 1: You complete all your theoretical and practical classes at the school.
  • Year 2: You spend the entire year working 100% of the time at a real company.

This solves the biggest problem in education today: the gap between theory and practice. Choose Vocational Training and start your career in the sky.

THE LOGIC OF IMPERSONAL PASSIVE (2) How to say "It is said..." or "He is said to be..."

Advanced Grammar: The Logic of Impersonal Passive (2)
@NeuroEnglishMMP

ADVANCED GRAMMAR The Logic of Impersonal Passive (2)

How to say "It is said..." or "He is said to be..." without naming the source. The art of Impersonal Passives.

1. La Estructura "IT" (Fácil)

It + is + VERBO PASIVO + that + frase...

  • 1. It is said that he is rich.
(Se dice que él es rico)
  • 2. It is thought that she lives here.
(Se piensa que ella vive aquí)
  • 3. It was reported that they left.
    (Se informó que se fueron)

Persona + is + PASIVA + TO + Infinitivo

  • 1. He is said to be rich.
    (Se dice que es rico)
  • 2. She is thought to live here.
    (Se piensa que vive aquí)
  • 3. They were reported to have left.

In English, to sound objective and formal (like a journalist or scientist), we don't say "People say that...". We use Impersonal Passives. There are two distinct ways to build them:

Structure A: The "Dummy IT"

Uses "It" as a placeholder subject. Keeps the original sentence almost exactly the same.

It + is + PARTICIPLE + that + clause
  • 🔹 It is believed that cats are smart.
  • 🔹 It is known that he works hard.
  • 🔹 It is expected that rain will fall.

Use: When focusing on the statement itself.

Structure B: The "Subject Shift"

Moves the Person to the front. The verb changes to an INFINITIVE.

Person + is + PARTICIPLE + TO + Infinitive
  • 🔸 Cats are believed to be smart.
  • 🔸 He is known to work hard.
  • 🔸 Rain is expected to fall.

Use: When focusing on the person involved.

The Time Machine: Which infinitive do I use?

The infinitive changes depending on when the action happened compared to the main verb.

1. Same Time / Future

The action happens now or later.

to + verb
Ex: He is said to be rich (now).
2. Past Action

The action happened before.

to + HAVE + participle
Ex: He is said to have been rich (before).
