Writing: Cómo hacer un buen 'writing' en Inglés: video, técnicas y práctica (2)

Writing in English is easier than you think (2)

Buenas tardes, estimados alumnos.

Write a composition of about 150 words.

1.You and a good friend want to study abroad for one year together. Write about the advantages and the disadvantages /pros and cons/ of working abroad.

First, draw a concept mind which visually describes the ideas you are going to talk about./ Primero, dibuja una mente conceptual que describa visualmente las ideas sobre las que vas a hablar.

Second, think of words you may use in each case, either advantage or disadvantage./ Segundo, piensa en palabras que puedas usar en cada caso, ya sea para ventaja o desventaja

Third, choose one appropriate connector to introduce each sentence and then write a paragraph of at least 5 sentences. /Tercero, elige un conector apropiado para introducir cada oración y luego escribe un párrafo de al menos 5 oraciones.

 Advantages

1. Cultural Experience

  • 3 words: traditions, lifestyle, diversity
  • Connector: For example,

2. Language Skills

  • 3 words: fluency, practice, communication
  • Connector: Moreover,

3. Personal Growth

  • 3 words: confidence, independence, maturity
  • Connector: As a result,

 Disadvantages

1. Cost

  • 3 words: travel, expenses, budget
  • Connector: However,

2. Homesickness

  • 3 words: family, comfort, loneliness
  • Connector: On the other hand,

3. Adjustment

  • 3 words: routines, habits, stress
  • Connector: At first,

4. Academic Challenges

  • 3 words: exams, subjects, pressure
  • Connector: In addition,

5. Missing Out

  • 3 words: events, friends, activities
  • Connector: Meanwhile,

Then, take into account the following rules:

1.  Use the structure and layout required for each type of composition.

2.  Use appropriate expressions related to the topic.

3.  Pay attention to the number of words.

4.  Do not use contractions such as don’t, aren’t, I’m, doesn’t, won’t….

5.  Write an opening with a topic sentence/ paragraph stating the issue.

6.  Write a body with supporting sentences

7.  Write a closing or concluding sentence/paragraph giving a summary of the main idea.

8.  Pay attention to indentations and margins.

9.  Use appropriate linkers to join both sentences and paragraphs.

10.  Use vocabulary related to the topic.

11.  Use appropriate tenses.

12.  Use appropriate punctuation marks.

Let's go for it:

Studying abroad for one year

Studying abroad for one year is an enriching, inspiring experience that reflects many of the ideas shown in the concept map. It helps students discover new environments while also developing important personal skills. In addition, it allows young people to understand the world in a deeper and more meaningful way.

As the concept map explains, there are several important advantages. For example, cultural experience gives students the chance to explore new traditions and lifestyles, making their view of the world broadened and enriched. Moreover, improving language skills becomes easier when students practise every day with native speakers. As a result, personal growth increases, and many students become more confident, independent, and mature.

However, the map also shows clear disadvantages. On the other hand, studying abroad can create financial or significant difficulties due to travel and living expenses. At first, many students feel homesick because they miss their families and usual routines. In addition, adjustment can be challenging, especially when facing new subjects, teaching styles, or academic pressure.

In conclusion, the concept map helps us understand that studying abroad includes both benefits and challenges. It offers cultural learning, language improvement, and personal development, but also brings emotional and academic difficulties that can be unexpected or intense. Overall, it is an experience that teaches valuable life lessons. Therefore, students should think carefully before making this important decision.
