Writing & Formal Connectors

The Logic of
Result

Master the connectors that link a cause to its consequence. Without them, your writing is just a list of facts.

Domino Logic

Cause: "I didn't study."

AS A RESULT, I FAILED

Phase 01

Everyday Result

Simple ways to connect ideas in spoken English or casual writing.

SO...

The most common connector. Always after a comma.

"It was raining, so we stayed home."

"He was late, so he missed the bus."

"I'm hungry, so let's eat."

"She's sick, so she can't come."

"They won, so they are happy."

THAT'S WHY...

Emphasizes the reason. Literally: "That is the reason why".

"He lied to me. That's why I'm angry."

"The car broke down. That's why we are late."

"I love art. That's why I visit museums."

"It's expensive. That's why I didn't buy it."

"You work hard. That's why you succeed."

Phase 02

Formal Writing Force

Connectors that give your essays authority and flow.

THEREFORE

Extremely formal. Used to show logical deduction.

"I think; therefore, I am."

"Profits fell. Therefore, we must cut costs."

"He is the heir; therefore, he will rule."

"It was illegal. Therefore, it was canceled."

"The facts are clear. Therefore, he is guilty."

AS A RESULT

The perfect link for direct cause-effect relationships.

"He was ill. As a result, he stayed in bed."

"Prices rose. As a result, sales dropped."

"I lost my keys. As a result, I was locked out."

"It snowed. As a result, schools closed."

"They argued. As a result, they broke up."

CONSEQUENTLY

Shows an inevitable consequence of an action.

"He failed the test. Consequently, he repeated."

"Oil leaked. Consequently, the engine died."

"She won. Consequently, she got a medal."

"Traffic was heavy. Consequently, I was late."

"The law changed. Consequently, we must adapt."

Phase 03

The Intensive Push

When something is so extreme that a result happens automatically.

SO + ADJ + THAT

The result of an adjective.

"He was so tired that he fell asleep."

"The book was so good that I read it twice."

"I was so happy that I cried."

"The music was so loud that my head hurt."

"She is so fast that nobody wins her."

SUCH + NOUN + THAT

The result of a quality + noun.

"It was such a cold day that I stayed in."

"He is such a nice man that everyone loves him."

"It was such a big cake that we couldn't eat it."

"She has such a loud voice that I hear her."

"It was such a mess that I left."

The Logic of Purpose Why did you do it? To act? For a thing? Or so that someone else could? Aim your arrow correctly.

The Logic of Purpose | PAGS Unit
PAGS Level 3/4 Preparation

The Logic of
Purpose

Why did you do it? To act? For a thing? Or so that someone else could? Aim your arrow correctly. ¿Para qué lo hiciste? ¿Para actuar? ¿Por una cosa? ¿O para que otro pudiera? Apunta tu flecha correctamente.

TO + ACTION

"I went TO buy bread."

FOR + NOUN

"I went FOR bread."

Phase 1

To Action or For Object?

The most common mistake: "For to do". It doesn't exist! El error más común: "For to do". ¡No existe!

Purpose of Action

Use TO + VERB when the purpose is an action.

I study TO learn. Estudio para aprender.
She called TO ask. Llamó para preguntar.
He stood up TO see. Se levantó para ver.

Exchange / Object

Use FOR + NOUN when the purpose is a thing.

We went out FOR a pizza. Salimos a por una pizza.
I am here FOR the meeting. Estoy aquí para la reunión.
He asked FOR help. Pidió ayuda (Sustantivo).

Function of Tools

Use FOR + ING only to describe a tool's job.

A knife is FOR CUTTING. Un cuchillo es para cortar (Su función).
This button is FOR STARTING. Este botón es para arrancar.
DON'T say: "I went there for buying". (Action = TO).
Phase 2

The Clause Connector

When you need a new Subject or a Modal (can/could), you need a bridge.

SO THAT / IN ORDER THAT

Present / Future (CAN/WILL)

"I study SO THAT I CAN pass."

Estudio para poder aprobar.

"Turn it up SO THAT we CAN hear."

Súbelo para que podamos oír.
Past (COULD/WOULD)

"I studied SO THAT I COULD pass."

Estudié para poder aprobar.

"He hid SO THAT nobody WOULD find him."

Se escondió para que nadie le encontrara.
Phase 3

The "Tuxedo" Connectors

Formal alternatives to "TO". Essential for negatives. Alternativas formales a "TO". Esenciales para negativos.

Formal Purpose

"He arrived early IN ORDER TO prepare."

Llegó temprano para prepararse.

"She ran SO AS TO catch the bus."

Corrió para coger el bus.

Negative Purpose (NOT TO)

Don't say "For not to". Use these:

"I left early SO AS NOT TO be late."

Me fui pronto para no llegar tarde.

"He whispered IN ORDER NOT TO wake them."

Susurró para no despertarles.

Cómo usar 'so' y 'such' en inglés II.

 Buenas tardes, estimados alumnos.

1)    My student Maria del Mar is such a hardworking student that she is improving a lot this year.

such a hardworking student that...

2)    My student Maria Del Mar is so hardworking that she is improving a lot this year:

Mi alumna MM es tan trabajadora que está mejorando mucho este año.

so hardworking that

3)    Sevilla is such a beautiful city that I wish I could live one day.

such a beautiful city that...

4)    Sevilla is so beautiful that I wish I could live there one day.

so beautiful that...

5)    La Giralda is such a wonderful monument that million of tourists visit it every year.

6)    La Giralda is so wonderful that million of tourists visit it every year.

Resumiendo:

such a hardworking student that...

such a beautiful city that...

such a wonderful monument...

3) so + adjetivo pero sin sustantivo delante.

so hardworking that...

so beautiful that...

so wonderful that
