TO + ACTION

"I went TO buy bread."

FOR + NOUN

"I went FOR bread."

Phase 1

To Action or For Object?

The most common mistake: "For to do". It doesn't exist! El error más común: "For to do". ¡No existe!

Purpose of Action

Use TO + VERB when the purpose is an action.

I study TO learn. Estudio para aprender.
She called TO ask. Llamó para preguntar.
He stood up TO see. Se levantó para ver.

Exchange / Object

Use FOR + NOUN when the purpose is a thing.

We went out FOR a pizza. Salimos a por una pizza.
I am here FOR the meeting. Estoy aquí para la reunión.
He asked FOR help. Pidió ayuda (Sustantivo).

Function of Tools

Use FOR + ING only to describe a tool's job.

A knife is FOR CUTTING. Un cuchillo es para cortar (Su función).
This button is FOR STARTING. Este botón es para arrancar.
DON'T say: "I went there for buying". (Action = TO).
