From Removals to 6,000 Euros a Month: The Rise of the Professional Carpenter
In a time when skilled trades are experiencing high demand in Spain, finding specialised professionals is becoming increasingly difficult. However, some workers have managed to turn this market need into a highly profitable opportunity. This is the case of Gabriel, a Venezuelan carpenter who arrived in Spain six years ago. After starting out in a moving company, he now earns up to 6,000 euros a month as a self-employed professional. His story proves that a trade learned with practice and perseverance can lead to remarkable stability.
Gabriel’s arrival in Spain was marked by a very different job. His first income came from the removals sector, where he earned between 80 and 90 euros a day loading and transporting furniture. Fortunately, he already had some manual skills from his youth. When his company needed staff to assemble furniture, Gabriel took the step. He gradually expanded his knowledge until he specialised in complex installations. Eventually, he participated in major projects, including carpentry work in a nursing home in Barcelona and the VIP area of the Santiago Bernabéu stadium.
After several years as an employee, Gabriel decided to become a freelancer. Since then, he manages his own schedule and rates. During busy months, he can invoice between 5,000 and 6,000 euros, taking home around 3,500 euros net. "Before, I earned 90 euros a day doing removals; now, my phone is full of messages from clients," he explains. Nevertheless, he admits that being a freelancer has disadvantages, such as facing difficulties when applying for bank loans.
Gabriel’s experience reflects a worrying trend for the sector: there is a growing demand for carpenters, plumbers, and electricians, but very few young people choose these careers. This shortage of generational replacement causes long waiting times for customers but also creates massive job opportunities for those who decide to learn these skills.
To address this situation, the educational system in Andalusia is strongly promoting Dual Vocational Training (FP Dual) in this field. Programs like the Higher Level Training Cycle in Design and Furnishing offer students the chance to combine classroom theory with paid apprenticeships in real companies. An excellent reference in Andalusia is IES La Rosaleda in Málaga, which provides state-of-the-art facilities to train the next generation of wood experts. Choosing this path is no longer a secondary option; it is a guaranteed route to a successful and well-paid future.
