03. Trampas "Spanglish"

El examen busca errores típicos de hispanohablantes. Cuidado con los False Friends (Actual no es actual) y las traducciones literales (I have cold está mal, se dice I am cold).

TEXT 1: Music in the 90s

Music in the 1990s was very popular and exciting. Many different styles of music became famous during this time. Pop music was very big. Artists like Britney Spears, Backstreet Boys, and Spice Girls were loved by many people around the world. Their songs were fun and easy to sing... The 1990s was a time of change in music. Many of the songs from the 90s are still popular today.

TEXT 2: Self-help Books

Self-help books are books that help people improve their lives. These books give advice on many topics like happiness, confidence... One famous self-help book is The 7 Habits... These books give useful tips for work and daily life... Reading self-help books can be a good way to grow and change.

3. Situation:

You receive an email from your English teacher: "Please remember to submit your writing assignment by Friday." What do you say to your classmate in Spanish?
Neuro-Help: Diccionario Mental

Submit = Entregar.

4. What is the correct passive voice of "They built this bridge in 1990"?

Neuro-Help: La Fórmula Pasiva

Si la frase original está en PASADO ("built"), la pasiva necesita el verbo TO BE en PASADO ("was" o "were").
Fórmula: Objeto + WAS/WERE + Participio.
Solo la opción B tiene "was built".

5. Choose the best phrase to begin a paragraph in an opinion essay.

Neuro-Help: Formalidad

En un examen (Essay), debes ser formal. No uses "I don't know" (No sé) ni "This is cool" (Esto mola). Usa expresiones elegantes como "In my opinion" (En mi opinión).

6. Choose the best sentence to introduce an example in an academic essay.

Neuro-Help: Académico

Busca palabras "listas". "Clear example" (ejemplo claro) suena mucho mejor que "Like..." (como...). El inglés académico evita ser demasiado casual.

TEXT 3: Power Outage

On April 28, there was a big power outage in the Iberian Peninsula... Suddenly, lights went out... People were surprised and confused. Some used candles or flashlights at home... Many people could not charge their phones... It was a strange and difficult day.

7. How did people react when the power outage happened?

Neuro-Help: Vocabulario Difícil

El texto dice "surprised and confused" (sorprendidos y confundidos).
La opción A usa la palabra "Puzzled".
Truco: Puzzled = Confused. Apréndetela, sale mucho.

Neuro-Help: Informal vs Formal

Si es para un amigo, ¡relájate! No digas "Dear Sir" (Estimado Señor). Di "Hey!" o "Hi!". Esas son las marcas de estilo informal.

TEXT 4: Cinema in the 50s

Cinema in the 1950s was very popular... Drive-in cinemas were also popular... The 1950s was also the time when television became popular... The cinema in the 1950s was an important part of culture and entertainment.

9. What is the text about?

Neuro-Help: Fechas y Siglos

10. What is a false friend between English and Spanish?

Neuro-Help: Trampa Mortal

11. Situation:

You read this in a store: "Exchange or refund within 30 days with receipt." What does this mean?
Neuro-Help: Compras

Refund = Devolución del dinero.
Receipt = Ticket de compra.

12. Choose the sentence that uses a Cleft Structure to emphasize information.

Neuro-Help: Estructura Rara

Las "Cleft Sentences" siempre empiezan por IT WAS... THAT...

TEXT 5: Teenagers

Many teenagers today spend a lot of time on their phones... While phones are useful, too much screen time can affect sleep and concentration.

13. Which sentence best summarizes the paragraph?

14. In which sentence is there a direct transfer from Spanish that is incorrect in English?

Neuro-Help: Error Típico Español

En español decimos "TENGO frío". En inglés dicen "SOY frío" (I am cold).
Si dices "I have cold", estás traduciendo literalmente del español. ¡Eso es el error!

15. You disagree with a colleague's point of view in an email. How do you respond politely?

Neuro-Help: Educación (Politeness)

En inglés hay que ser suave. No digas "You're wrong" (Estás equivocado) ni "Terrible argument".
Usa la técnica del sándwich: "Veo tu punto" (I see your point) + PERO + "Tengo otra opinión".

16. Listening Task

Escucha el diálogo y responde.

What's her son's attitude?

Neuro-Help: Actitud

= Cuestiona (Questions).
Al final dice "You're probably right" = Acepta (Accepts).
La opción A tiene ambas partes.

Preguntas de Reserva

17. A colleague gives you feedback. What's a good way to respond?

Neuro-Help: Agradecer

"I appreciate your feedback" (Aprecio tu opinión).

TEXT 6: Wildfires 2025

In the summer of 2025, Spain faced many wildfires... These fires started in several regions, including Catalonia, Valencia, and Andalusia...

18. Where did the fires take place?

Neuro-Help: Listas Abiertas

Bridging the Gap: Skills & Inclusion

In Spain, Veolia, a company specializing in water, energy, and waste management, is spearheading initiatives to boost employabilityEmpleabilidad and social inclusion. These programs target groups facing the toughest barriers to entering the labor market. With 25.8% of the population at risk of social exclusion, particularly among young people and immigrants, the lack of specific training remains a critical obstacle. In this scenario, models that blend technical skills with real-world experience are vital, especially in strategic sectors like renewable energy and waste managementGestión de residuos, where qualified profiles are in high demand.

A standout example is the Dual Training initiative launched in 2022 at the TorrePET plastic recycling plant in Torremejía, Badajoz. This program emerged from a specific operational need: to expand the plant's production capacity while creating opportunities for 15 vulnerable youths. Following this success, the model was replicated in Madrid in 2024. Co-funded by the European Union, this Dual VET program caters to both young adults (18-30) and long-term unemployed seniors (over 45). The methodology is practical and immersive: participants spend 65% of their time working at the company and 35% receiving technical instruction at partner centers like the Agremia Technical School.

The results speak for themselves. In the most recent edition, 14 participants obtained an official certificate in the assembly and maintenance of HVACClimatización (Heating, Ventilation, Air Cond.) systems, and the majority were hired immediately. For students like Anastasia Rodríguez, this format requires rapid adaptation but offers a direct path back into the workforce.

Beyond technical training, Veolia addresses chronic vulnerability through the OLA Program (Occupation, Leadership, and Accompaniment), launched in 2020 alongside the Red CrossCruz Roja. Recognizing that economic instability makes job hunting nearly impossible, OLA provides a holistic safety net. It covers basic needs while offering emotional support and job placement guidance. Over five years, OLA has transformed the lives of over 1,000 participants across 18 municipalities, including Barcelona, León, and Alicante. As Jennifer, a participant from Alicante, notes, the human warmth and personalized support are just as important as the professional opportunities.
