Informal vs Formal. Do you drag the preposition at the end, or do you move it to the VIP front seat? Informal vs Formal. ¿Arrastras la preposición al final o la pones en el asiento VIP delantero?
"The girl (who) I spoke TO."
Preposition at the end.
La chica con la que hablé. (Preposición al final)."The girl TO WHOM I spoke."
Preposition moves front + WHOM.
La chica a quien hablé. (Preposición delante + WHOM).The Rules of the Game
The position of the preposition changes the pronoun allowed. La posición de la preposición cambia el pronombre permitido.
Relaxed Style
- Can use Who / That / Which.
- Can OMIT the pronoun (Ghost).
Strict Style
- ONLY use WHOM (people) or WHICH (things).
- NEVER use Who or That.
- NEVER omit the pronoun.
The "Where" Equivalent
WHERE = Preposition + WHICH WHERE equivale a Preposición + WHICH.
OPTION A (Simple)
"The house where I was born."
OPTION B (Formal)
"The house in which I was born."
Common Equivalents:
- where = in / at / on which
- when = on / in / at which
- why = for which
